A Kirov resident was caught stealing virtual items.
A 25-year-old resident of Kirov lost in-game items after clicking a link in a messaging app and logging in via a fake server of an esports platform. The stolen items were character appearance enhancements and weapons worth more than 90,000 rubles.
Investigators from the cybercrime unit found that the link led to a phishing site from which the perpetrator gained access to the account data. The perpetrator turned out to be a 22-year-old resident of Kirov. The young man admitted that he resold the stolen virtual items for real money and spent the proceeds on himself.
A criminal case has been opened against the suspect under Part 2 of Article 158 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Theft"). He has compensated the victim for the damage. The police are now checking whether he is involved in other similar crimes in Kirov Oblast and beyond.
