In Kirov, barrels of chemicals have been rusting next to houses for more than two years.
Residents of Komintern continue to live next to a hazardous storage site — for more than two years over 1,500 rusty barrels of flammable chemicals have been standing directly under windows and near garages on Iskra Street. The exact contents have not been checked, but they may be petroleum products, solvents, or acids, according to social media.
Vyacheslav Simakov, head of the Kirov administration, promised to "immediately eliminate the threat" after media publications. However, work has not begun — the authorities are waiting for action from the owner of the waste, who is not taking any measures.
The Ministry of Environmental Protection of the Kirov Region confirmed: so far no cases of leakage have been recorded, but the threat remains because the barrels with chemical waste are freely accessible. In December last year, the Arbitration Court ordered the entrepreneur to remove the containers, but the decision has still not been carried out.
"Although removal by the owner seems unlikely, and recovering the costs later may be difficult, in order to prevent possible harm the ministry recommended that the Kirov city administration use the right provided by the court decision — to organize the removal of the barrels by a specialized organization with subsequent recovery of the expenses from the responsible party through court proceedings. The corresponding letter has already been sent by the ministry to the head of the city administration. The situation is under the ministry's constant supervision until its final resolution," the ministry told Newsler.ru.
