Kirov residents were told what to do during the moose "weddings".

The regional Ministry of Natural Resources reported that moose have entered the rut, during which they may be restless and even aggressive. Therefore Kirov residents should be extremely careful when visiting forests.

“From late August through October moose move around actively in search of mates. The search is accompanied by them ramming their antlers against tree trunks and fighting with rivals,” the Ministry of Environmental Protection of the Kirov Region noted.

Experts said that this past summer’s weather helped moose build up good condition ahead of the breeding season. During their “weddings” moose almost completely stop feeding and concentrate their energy on fighting rivals and producing offspring. Those who go into the forest should remember that if they encounter a moose during the rut they should not frighten the animal, shout, or wave their arms. In that case the moose may act aggressively. Do not try to feed or photograph the moose. You should calmly move away and leave the animal’s line of sight.

Motorists should also be extremely careful when driving on country roads, especially along forested areas: during the rut moose can bolt out onto the road at any time.
