A Kirov resident tried to "treat" his stomach with cheap alcohol and "Obezbol".

As reported by the regional Ministry of Health, of the 48 patients admitted to the Kirov Regional Clinical Hospital with a diagnosis of "acute pancreatitis," 87% were men, and in almost all cases an alcohol binge was noted on the eve of the illness.

The region's chief surgeon, head of Surgical Department No. 1 at the Kirov Regional Clinical Hospital, Igor Papyrin, gave an example from his practice. "A 40-year-old man was admitted to the department after chronic alcohol abuse. He experienced severe abdominal pain, which he tried to relieve by drinking 1–3 bottles of cheap alcohol and by taking painkillers. The man also had nausea and vomiting," the doctor said.

Ultrasound and contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed that the patient had acute destructive pancreatitis in a late stage of development: cavities containing fluid and pus had formed in the pancreas. The man required percutaneous puncture drainage of the pancreas to evacuate the pathological contents and to prevent the development of sepsis. He was also prescribed antibiotic therapy. The patient was discharged home with significant improvement.

The regional Ministry of Health noted that the increase in acute and chronic pancreatitis is directly related to poor diet, the consumption of large amounts of fast food, smoking and alcohol dependence.
