Alexander Bastrykin is tipped to become chairman of the Supreme Court.
Head of the Investigative Committee of Russia Alexander Bastrykin may take the post of chairman of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation after the death of Irina Podnosova. Vedomosti, citing five sources, reports that his candidacy is being discussed as one of the main options.
The newspaper's interlocutors call Bastrykin "the most obvious option": his term as head of the Investigative Committee expires in August 2025, and no new extension has yet been announced. According to sources, only a "trusted and familiar person to the head of state" with significant political influence and serious legal experience can contend for the post of Supreme Court chairman, writes Kommersant.
The Higher Qualification Board of Judges is accepting applications for the vacancy until August 25. On August 21 candidates must pass a qualifying exam. After that the board will issue a conclusion, and the president will submit a nomination to the Federation Council.
Alexander Bastrykin has headed the Investigative Committee since 2011. Before that he served as the first deputy prosecutor general. In 2016 President Vladimir Putin bestowed on him the rank of General of Justice.
