Convicts sentenced to forced labor will be allowed to order prepared meals.
The corresponding amendments to the Penal Enforcement Code of the Russian Federation, prepared by the Ministry of Justice, have been put up for public discussion here.
Currently, convicts buy groceries in shops and cook in a communal kitchen. Under the new procedure they will be able to submit an application to the head of the correctional center and choose two or three hot meals a day, which will be delivered from the canteens and food units of other FSIN institutions if they are no further than a two‑hour drive away, Kommersant reports.
Payment will be taken from the convict’s personal account, into which wages and other income are deposited. If there are insufficient funds, the amount will be deducted from the next paycheck.
There are 417 correctional centers in the country with capacity for 51,000 people. In 2024, 20,100 convicts were sentenced to forced labor.
A separate Ministry of Justice project provides meals for those who have just arrived at a center and have not yet found employment, so that they do not have to rely on help from other convicts or staff.
