From August 9, Russians will start counting sparrows.
The All-Russian Sparrow Census is an annual environmental education campaign held twice a year: in summer and winter. This time, it starts on August 9th and lasts until the 17th. The organizers — the Union for Bird Protection of Russia, in cooperation with the Moscow State University Zoological Museum, the "Martha Snail" project, and other organizations — invite everyone to join the counting effort.
To participate, simply choose a location where sparrows are often seen — a park, square, courtyard, or even a balcony — and observe: how many birds are there, what they are doing, and how they behave. Afterwards, record the results in a special observation journal. If desired, participants can include photos and videos, reports "Kommersant."
As the organizers note, the sparrow population is declining not only in Europe but also in Russia. "Our campaign teaches responsibility and reminds us that even the most familiar species can disappear if people neglect nature," states the project's official website.

From August 9 to 17, residents of the Kirov region and the entire country can help scientists by participating in the sparrow census. The nationwide campaign is not the first of its kind, and its goal is serious: to collect current data on the population of house and field sparrows, whose numbers are gradually declining, according to experts.
