The State Duma proposed extending the New Year holidays to 12 days in 2026.

New Year's holidays in 2026 may become longer — from December 31, 2025 to January 11, 2026 inclusive. This initiative was made by Yaroslav Nilov, head of the State Duma Committee on Labor, Social Policy and Veterans' Affairs, RBC reports.

According to the deputy, according to the production calendar, December 31, 2025 has already been declared a day off. Official holidays will last from January 1 to January 8. However, January 8th falls on a Thursday, and Friday, January 9th, becomes the first working day. After that, it's the weekend again, January 10th and 11th.

Nilov noted that one working day between holidays and weekends is unlikely to be productive: "People will take vacations at their own expense, just somehow negotiate with the employer." Therefore, he suggested making January 9th also a weekend and officially fixing it in the production calendar.

The MP believes that continuous vacations will allow citizens to "have a good rest," especially given the current level of anxiety and fatigue. He suggested compensating for the additional day off by postponing one of the holidays — for example, January 3 or 4, which in 2026 fall on Saturday and Sunday — to other periods, such as the May holidays.
