98-year-old veteran from Kirov went to Moscow to celebrate his Victory

      On the evening of May 7, 98-year-old Gennady Ivanovich Penkin, hero of the Great Patriotic War, took the Vyatka train to Moscow. He will be the only participant from our region in the celebrations on Red Square.

      The medical and social services of the region were preparing the man for the trip. Gennady Ivanovich underwent a medical examination at the hospital for war veterans. In addition, he is accompanied to the Victory Day Parade by a social worker.

      The hero was born in Kirov. In 1942, after graduating from seventh grade, the man worked at a factory as a turner, and in November 1943 he was drafted into the army. The man studied at the Tyumen mortar school, and after that, with the rank of junior sergeant, he was sent to the active army of the third Baltic Front and enlisted in the 138th Infantry Regiment of the fifth Infantry Division of the NKVD troops. Gennady Ivanovich worked as a radiotelegraph operator.

      With his regiment, the hero went through the military path from Veliky Novgorod to Estonia, served as a commander of the radio department, and also participated in the fight against nationalists in Latvia, Lithuania and Western Ukraine. The veteran was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War II degree and the medal "For Victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945.

      " As the veteran himself said, participation in the main event of this year on Red Square is a great joy and honor for him. He hopes to meet with another native of Kirov, the Hero of Russia, a member of the SVO Vladislav Golovin with the call sign "String". Gennady Ivanovich would also like to shake hands with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the press service of the Social Development of the Kirov region reported.
