"In the Lost Lands": Jovovich in the World of George Martin
Firstly, it is a film adaptation of the fantasy story of the same name by the creator of "Game of Thrones" (18+), George Martin. It was written back in 1982, before the creation of the famous cycle. But it already contains the components of the writer's future success – interesting and charismatic characters, the witch Gray Alice and a hunter named Boyz. They travel together to the lost lands to find the werewolf, but the journey turns out to be the one where all the characters get what they want, but not in the way they wanted. The main theme (both of the story and its film adaptation) is to be afraid of desires, they tend to come true!
Secondly, the film is a free variation in the spirit of Anderson's previous blockbusters such as Resident Evil (18+) on the theme of the story. As well as elements borrowed from "Mad Max" (18+) and even the book "The Dark Tower" (16+) by Stephen King. Nevertheless, Martin's story is small, it would not have been enough for the two-hour running time of the film. Therefore, Anderson inserted a bunch of his action attractions into the film - both train chases, and powerful battles with mutated creatures, and again, his wife, Mila Jovovich, cheerfully chopping off the heads of monsters with sickles. But, thanks to the stuffing laid by Martin, the story turned out to be not only spectacular, but also extremely meaningful. Unlike many parts of Resident Evil.
Thirdly, Anderson added shades of noir and western elements to his usual comic style, which made the picture look extremely beautiful. The world after the apocalypse, presented by the director, I want to examine and look into the details. And also analyze exactly how everything was shot in terms of directing and cinematography. Overall, it's definitely a step forward for Paul W. S. Anderson, who was considered by many to be a craftsman who rivets goofy blockbusters. And he just didn't have enough Martin for cool stories!
"In the Lost Lands" (2025, 18+). Our rating: 4.8/5.
