Russians have started to choose white wine more often instead of red.
Roskachestvo surveyed 1,500 residents of major Russian cities and found out how wine preferences have changed. The study showed that traditional market leaders are gradually losing popularity. The main criterion for choosing wine for 34% of Russians remains the sugar content. Price is important for 12% of respondents, while the color of the drink is important for 11%. For the first time, color has proven to be more important than the producer's brand: buyers are increasingly guided by their own preferences rather than a well-known name.
Red semi-sweet wines remain the most popular, but interest in them is noticeably declining. Compared to previous studies, the number of their fans has decreased by 23 percentage points in terms of color and by 13 in terms of sugar content. At the same time, the demand for white, rosé, dry, and semi-dry wines is growing. Moreover, by the end of last year, white and rosé still wines surpassed red in the number of bottles sold for the first time. Experts predict that this year, the share of red wines in the market may drop below 50%.
Most Russians are not willing to spend more than 1,500 rubles on a bottle of wine. The most successful price-to-quality ratio, according to buyers, is considered to be in the range of 900–1,000 rubles. Experts link the change in tastes to the popularity of a healthy lifestyle. More and more people are choosing less strong and less sweet drinks that are suitable not only for festive gatherings but also for everyday relaxation. As a result, wineries are gradually expanding their range of white, rosé, and dry wines while reducing the share of rich reds and sweet wines.
It is worth noting that earlier, the Kirov region was among the regions with the highest alcohol consumption. According to research data, the region ranks first in the Volga Federal District in terms of alcohol product consumption. Additionally, in 2024, the region became sixth in Russia for beer consumption, and 125 residents of the region died from alcohol poisoning over the year.
