Kirov doctors performed a complex surgery that federal centers refused to undertake.
In Kirov, doctors at the Center for Traumatology, Orthopedics, and Neurosurgery successfully conducted complex treatment for a 69-year-old patient who had previously been denied care at federal medical centers. The man was diagnosed with a deep infection of the hip joint after hip replacement surgery, which caused his leg to shorten by three centimeters. The situation was complicated by serious cardiovascular issues. Without support for the heart rhythm, performing the surgery was impossible, and installing a permanent pacemaker during an active infection could lead to dangerous complications, including sepsis.
After a consultation at the Ministry of Health of the Kirov Region, it was decided to conduct treatment at the Center for Traumatology. The doctors chose a staged approach.
As orthopedic traumatologist Ivan Kotsiba explained, a temporary pacemaker was first installed for the patient, allowing for heart monitoring during the surgery. After two days of observation, specialists performed revision hip replacement surgery.
The operation was successful. The man remained under medical supervision for another two weeks, after which he was discharged in satisfactory condition for further outpatient treatment.
Dmitry Kurdyumov, the First Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Kirov Region, noted that this case exemplified the effective work of a team of specialists from different fields. According to him, Kirov doctors were able to find a solution in a situation that was considered extremely complex, confirming their high level of training and readiness to perform the most challenging surgeries.
