Net on the Vyatka, a boat, and 10 fish: a Kirov resident will face trial for poaching
The Investigation Department of the Kirov Linear Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia on Transport reported the completion of the investigation into a criminal case initiated regarding the illegal extraction of aquatic biological resources. The incident that prompted the investigation occurred at the end of May this year on the Vyatka River.
During a planned raid, transport police officers noticed a man in an inflatable boat. The 41-year-old resident of the region was clearly violating fishing regulations: he had set a 16-meter net across the riverbed, choosing a spawning area where the fish's passage was artificially blocked.
By the time the police arrived, the poacher had managed to catch 10 specimens — his catch included roach, bream, and tench. The authorities stopped the illegal actions on-site, seizing both the fish and the prohibited fishing gear. Experts assessed the damage to the environment at 10,000 rubles.
The collected evidence allowed for the actions to be classified under paragraphs "b" and "v" of part 1 of article 256 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (illegal extraction (catch) of aquatic biological resources). The maximum penalty provided for by this norm is two years of imprisonment. Currently, the case materials have been transferred to the court for a final decision.
