The Ministry of Digital Development called the removal of VK apps from the App Store politically motivated.
The agency reported that Apple has not yet provided a reasoned position on the existence of sanctions requirements that could lead to the blocking of Russian services. "Based on the conclusions received, including from American legal firms, the Ministry of Digital Development confirms the absence of grounds for blocking VK applications," the ministry noted. Furthermore, the agency emphasized that Apple has effectively ignored the socially significant functions of remote applications. According to the Ministry of Digital Development, these services are used by millions of Russians for communication, information gathering, education, and even alerts about emergencies and incidents. The ministry also stated that it views the actions of the American corporation as a manifestation of unfair competition. In the agency's opinion, the removal of applications may be related to the protection of the interests of foreign digital platforms, which are gradually losing audience in the Russian market due to competition with domestic services. Separately, the Ministry of Digital Development pointed out that Apple, according to the agency, does not comply with Russian legislation requiring users to have the option to choose a default search engine, as well as the pre-installation of the Russian app store on its devices. In this regard, the ministry has sent a request to the Federal Antimonopoly Service asking for an urgent review of the situation and a legal assessment. Recall that the day before, several services from the VK group disappeared from the App Store without prior notice. Users lost access to VK Music, VK Video, VK Messenger, VK Dating, Zen, Mail.ru, Odnoklassniki, and Skillbox. Earlier, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that the removal of Russian applications calls into question Apple's reliability as a provider of commercial services. According to him, relevant agencies intend to request official clarifications from the company.
