Experts have found a malicious program posing as a fuel search service.
Kaspersky Lab reported the discovery of a malicious program that appears to be a service for finding fuel. It collects data from users' smartphones.
The program is intended for the Android system. It is distributed through websites discussing the availability of fuel. Since mid-June, more than a thousand users have attempted to download it — and this is only according to the company's data. In reality, the number of affected individuals may be much higher.
According to experts, the program collects documents, photos, and videos stored on the smartphone. Before this, it requests access to the device's geolocation and user files.
Previously, the company's specialists had already found fraudulent websites related to fuel. Under the pretext of providing useful information, they attempted to steal bank card data or passwords from messengers.
Experts recommend being cautious with services that offer to download applications from unknown sources, checking their reputation, and using only official app stores whenever possible. It is also important to pay attention to the requested permissions and to use device protection applications that can detect malware and block phishing resources.
