At the SPIEF, they decided to study why Russians are getting fat.
The project will start in the summer of 2026. It will be implemented jointly by a large medical research center (endocrinology profile) and a well-known pharmaceutical company. The memorandum of intent was signed by the heads of both organizations. According to estimates from the World Health Organization, obesity has become one of the main challenges of modern times. In Russia, the number of new cases of obesity increases by 25% each year. Moreover, having such a diagnosis and metabolic syndrome, as proven, adds four years to a person's biological age. The goal of the project is to study the impact of body weight on the rates of biological aging in different age groups. The participants plan to create a model for assessing biological age and develop personalized treatment methods for metabolic diseases, which can then be implemented in regular medical practice. A representative of the pharmaceutical company reminded that the collaboration with the medical center has lasted for over 15 years, and during this time, they have managed to improve medical care algorithms. The new project aims to enhance the quality and longevity of life through personalized solutions in the treatment of metabolic disorders. The results of the research will allow for the implementation of objective indicators of biological age in clinical practice, create a scientific basis for the individual selection of drug therapy, and propose a set of measures to reduce the socio-economic burden of metabolic diseases. The head of the medical center pointed out a concerning figure: one in three residents of the country suffers from obesity, reports karelinform.ru. A comprehensive study will provide the opportunity not only to assess the overall picture but also to identify key risk factors and causal relationships, and then develop effective prevention strategies. An expert explained that excess weight provokes chronic inflammation and weakens the immune system, increasing the body's vulnerability to infections. Among the dangerous consequences of obesity are insulin resistance, vascular disorders, and fatty liver disease.
