Eight Russian novels made it to the British top 100 best books.
The Guardian published a ranking of the 100 best novels published in English or in English translations. To compile it, 172 experts — writers, critics, and literary scholars — were surveyed. Each named their ten best books, and the final list was formed based on the frequency of mentions and positions.
Russian classics are represented by eight works. Included in the top ten are "Anna Karenina" (16+, 6th place) and "War and Peace" (16+, 7th place) by Leo Tolstoy. In the middle of the list are "Lolita" (18+, 25th place) and "Pale Fire" (16+, 29th place) by Vladimir Nabokov, as well as "The Brothers Karamazov" by Fyodor Dostoevsky (12+, 28th place). Following them are "The Master and Margarita" by Mikhail Bulgakov (16+, 66th place), "Crime and Punishment" by Dostoevsky (16+, 69th place), and "Life and Fate" by Vasily Grossman (18+, 91st place).
The top three are "Middlemarch" by George Eliot (16+), "Beloved" by Toni Morrison (18+), and "Ulysses" by James Joyce (18+).
