A 35-year-old resident of the village of Vozhgaly contacted the intermunicipal department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia "Kumensky." He reported that he became a victim of remote scammers who extorted 826,000 rubles from him over several transactions.
The scheme turned out to be classic but multi-layered. The first call came from an unknown person who introduced himself as a mobile operator. He convinced the victim to provide a code from an SMS message—allegedly for extending the service contract. The second call came from a fake employee of the "Gosuslugi" portal. The caller stated that the provided numbers led to the hacking of the personal account, and now third parties were trying to apply for a loan in the name of the account owner.
The climax came in the third stage. To "fix the situation," the man was offered to take out a new loan himself—only this way, according to the interlocutors, could the application of the fraudsters be canceled. The resident of Vozhgaly believed it, took out a loan for 826,000 rubles, traveled to Kirov, and transferred all the money to a certain "special account," the details of which were dictated over the phone. The scammers assured him that the loan would soon be repaid.
However, after a few days, nothing happened. The loan remained unpaid. Realizing that he had been deceived, the man contacted the police.
A criminal case has been initiated on the fact under the article "Fraud on a large scale."
The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Kirov region reminds: do not provide codes from SMS messages from online services to strangers, no matter who they claim to be. Do not follow instructions for taking out loans and transferring money as directed by strangers. Employees of government agencies and law enforcement never require citizens to take such actions.
