Spiny threat: Kirov residents warned about the danger of spring hedgehogs
With the arrival of warmth in the Kirov region, hedgehogs have awakened. And while some residents are charmed by the prickly creatures, specialists from the Veterinary Department urge caution.
As explained by the agency, hedgehogs that have awakened from hibernation may be carriers of dangerous diseases and parasites. The list of threats includes:
internal and external parasites;
infections — leptospirosis and salmonellosis;
rabies, which is transmitted through bites and saliva and is fatal to humans.
How to avoid trouble?
First — maintain distance. If you see a hedgehog in your yard, in a park, or in the woods, do not try to pet it, pick it up, or bring it home. Admire it from afar.
Second — watch the animal's behavior. If the hedgehog seems unusually friendly, lethargic, or, on the contrary, aggressive — it may be sick. You should not approach such animals under any circumstances.
Third — actions in case of accidental contact. Even if you only touched a hedgehog, wash your hands with soap immediately. And if the animal bit or scratched you — do not delay: you must see a doctor immediately. This is crucial for preventing serious diseases, including rabies.
