Excess weight is recorded in 56% of Russians, obesity in almost every fourth.
At the forum "Health of the Nation - the Foundation of Russia's Prosperity," held in Moscow, the chief freelance specialist-nutritionist of the Ministry of Health, Viktor Tutelyan, provided data: excess body weight is observed in 56% of Russians, and obesity affects 22 to 26% of the population. According to him, improper nutrition is one of the main causes of diseases — it accounts for 30 to 50% of all cases, reports the publication "Izvestia."
At the same time, Russians consume sugar four times above the norm, and saturated fats 1.5 to 2 times more. Experts also note excessive salt usage and insufficient consumption of vegetables, fruits, and vitamins. As a worrying signal, the director of the NMIC of therapy and preventive medicine, Oksana Drapkina, pointed out the increase in the number of fast-food outlets in Russia over the past 15 years.
The president of the League of Health of the Nation, cardiac surgeon Leo Bokeria, stated that it is necessary to create a national healthy living system that should cover all areas — home, work, study, and be accessible "at the place of residence." According to him, this system should be built on existing successful practices.
As part of the federal project "Health for Everyone," the share of citizens leading a healthy lifestyle has increased from 9.1% in 2023 to 11% in 2026. As Oksana Drapkina noted, the goal by 2030 is to reach 13%. To achieve this, it is proposed to create "green" zones, pedestrian and bicycle paths, "health trails," sports grounds, and physical fitness and health complexes in the regions.
Viktor Tutelyan also emphasized: healthy eating can prevent 80% of heart attacks, strokes, and diabetes.
Senator Daria Lantratova drew attention to another problem — the low awareness of citizens about available treatment options. According to her, people often do not know about existing projects such as "Oncopatrol" (early detection of oncological diseases) and "Sanitary Shield of the Country" (protection against biological threats and epidemics).
The chairman of the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Russia, Sergey Chernogaev, in turn, stated the need to create conditions for labor safety, conduct health screenings, care for children, and develop mass sports.

Excess weight is recorded in 56% of Russians, obesity in almost every fourth.
More than half of Russia's citizens are overweight, and the proportion suffering from obesity reaches 26%. Experts link this to a fourfold excess in sugar consumption, an excess of salt, and the growing popularity of fast food.
