Rospotrebnadzor: The risk of tick-borne encephalitis infection has increased throughout the Kirov region.
The information reflected in the agency's document is the result of the past year 2025 and is provided for use in "on-the-ground" work, as well as for planning anti-epidemic measures in 2026. According to Rospotrebnadzor, in a number of regions of Russia, certain administrative territories are endemic for tick-borne viral encephalitis, meaning they have a high risk of infection. As for the Kirov region, according to the agency, the entire territory of our region was endemic in 2025. It is likely that the risk of tick-borne encephalitis infection has not decreased in the current year, 2026. It should be noted that in the Volga Federal District, in addition to the Kirov region, the category "entire territory" also includes Perm Krai and Udmurtia. Meanwhile, the Rospotrebnadzor website for the Kirov region still lacks information on the number of people bitten by ticks and infected with tick-borne encephalitis since the beginning of the current "tick season." The editorial team of Newsler.ru sent a corresponding information request to the agency last week. However, the response received from the local "Rospotreb" contained only vague information. In particular, it was indicated that "in the current season, the rate of population appeals to medical organizations regarding tick bites does not exceed the average multi-year appeal rate for this time of year and is 2.5 times lower than the appeal rate recorded for the same period last year." The response also stated that "the incidence rate of Ixodes tick-borne borreliosis in the region's population corresponds to the average multi-year incidence rate for this period." The agency also noted that no information on laboratory-confirmed cases of tick-borne viral encephalitis among the region's population had been received by the management. It is possible that there are currently no people in the Kirov region who have "caught" encephalitis from a tick. However, it is not entirely clear why and for what purpose the regional Rospotrebnadzor might be withholding information about the number of "bitten," especially since in the last epidemiological "tick season," this data was published almost weekly.
