Palm Sunday will be celebrated on April 5: why willow is blessed and what it means
The services will take place in the churches of the Vyatka Diocese on April 4 and 5. Traditionally, on Saturday during the all-night vigil, willow branches are blessed — they are sprinkled with holy water, after which the faithful take them home.
The holiday is dedicated to the event when Jesus Christ entered Jerusalem, and the people welcomed him as a king, laying palm branches along his path. In Russia, palms are replaced by willow — one of the first symbols of spring.
It is customary to keep the blessed branches at home for a year, usually next to icons. It is believed that the willow symbolizes hope and reminds the faithful of the possibility of salvation. Old branches are not thrown away — they are either burned or taken to the church.
Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week — the last week before Easter.
