Schools may cut foreign-language class hours.

According to the rector of the Moscow State Pedagogical University, Alexey Lubkov, this concerns students in grades 5–7. According to the ministry’s plans, the volume of foreign‑language instruction in these grade levels is proposed to be reduced from 510 to 408 hours, Izvestia reports.

Lubkov said the initiative is linked to the need to optimize pupils’ workload and to more rationally redistribute teaching time. At the same time, no changes are planned for the upper grades of the basic school.

Thus, in grades 8 and 9 the foreign language, as before, will be taught three hours a week.
