In Russia in 2025, the total fertility rate decreased.

In December 2025 the total fertility rate (TFR) in Russia stood at 1.374 compared with 1.4 a year earlier, the newspaper Kommersant reports. During 2025 the indicator fluctuated between 1.37 and 1.39 — in spring and autumn it was about 1.38. The statistics do not include data for the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics (DPR, LPR), or for the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson oblasts. The highest TFR in December 2025 was recorded in Chechnya — 2.596. Regions with the highest fertility also included Tuva (2.214) and the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug (2.01). A year earlier the leaders by this indicator were also Chechnya and Tuva. The lowest values of the total fertility rate in 2025 were noted in Leningrad Oblast (0.914), and in Smolensk (1.012) and Vladimir (1.059) oblasts. In addition, in Russia the fertility rate for third and subsequent children fell — in December 2025 it was 0.362 compared with 0.376 in 2024. The total fertility rate shows how many children on average one woman would bear over the entire reproductive period — from ages 15 to 50. To maintain the population this indicator should be 2.1. The maximum TFR in modern Russia was recorded in 2015 — 1.77. Recall that in Kirov Oblast over three years the fertility rate fell significantly: from 2020 to 2023 it decreased from 8.9‰ to 7.5‰ per 1,000 people, while mortality increased — reflecting a worsening demographic situation in the region. It was also reported in January 2026 that, based on the results of 2025, Kirov Oblast entered the top three of the Volga Federal District by total fertility rate, surpassing the district’s average figures.
