In Kirov, the snowdrifts turned out to be bigger than the children.

In Kirov, snowbanks at pedestrian crossings pose a danger to children and adults. The inspection was carried out by People's Front activists together with a 12-year-old fifth-grade student.

Particularly problematic areas are located by School No. 18 on Makarenko Street, School No. 2 on Mira Street, Kindergarten No. 159 on Podgornaya Street, and the Olympic Reserve School at 1b Leningradskaya Street. The snow piles reach 1.3 meters, and children up to 1.7 meters tall are not visible behind them. Many crossings also have snow drifts and ice, increasing the risk of falls and accidents. Last year, in the presence of activists, a 9-year-old girl nearly ended up under the wheels of a truck.

The municipal contract for street and road maintenance sets limits: snowbanks must not be located closer than 10 meters to pedestrian crossings and 20 meters to stops; their width must not exceed 50 cm, and their height must not be above 1 meter.

The People's Front will send information about the violations to the city administration, and if there is no response — to the prosecutor's office.

Citizens are urged to help monitor snow removal: if you notice high snowbanks near schools or kindergartens, report it to the People's Front group on VKontakte or by email: [email protected].

Scientists from the Laboratory of Astrochemistry at Ural Federal University have made an important discovery: they found “laughing gas” — nitrous oxide (N2O) — in interstellar ices. The results were published in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics, and the research was supported by the Russian Science Foundation. Photo: NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI / Joseph DePasquale (STScI), Alyssa Pagan (STScI), Anton Koekemoer (STScI) Nitrous oxide was detected in the ices near 16 protostars out of 50 studied. Its abundance ranged from 0.2% to 2.1% relative to CO ice. This is the first reliable confirmation that N2O is indeed present in interstellar ices and occurs there fairly widely. More than 300 molecules are already known in the gas phase of interstellar clouds, but finding them in ices is much more difficult — until now scientists had been able to confidently identify only eight. Nitrous oxide is now the ninth such molecule. Researchers also reported preliminary signs of another molecule — isocyanic acid (HNCO). To identify N2O, the team compared James Webb Space Telescope data with laboratory spectra of ice grown on the ISEAge setup. This helped to accurately interpret the observations and confirm the finding. The discovery is important because nitrous oxide can react more readily at very low temperatures than molecular nitrogen (N2). It can participate in the formation of more complex nitrogen-containing compounds — including those from which amino acids could later form. Interestingly, half of the protostars with detected N2O are located in the Orion A star-forming region. Scientists suggest that strong ultraviolet radiation in this region may influence the formation of this molecule, but the exact mechanisms remain to be determined. * Protostar — a young star in the process of formation, surrounded by gas and dust. In Kirov, the snowdrifts turned out to be bigger than the children.

People's Front activists documented snowbanks at schools and kindergartens that obstruct drivers' view of children and create a traffic hazard. The height of the snowbanks exceeds the standards of the municipal contract.
