Mother's Day is celebrated in Russia.

The idea of establishing Mother's Day was discussed back in the 1980s–1990s, but it received official status on January 30, 1998, when Decree No. 120 “On Mother's Day” was signed by the President of the Russian Federation. The document was prepared at the initiative of the Committee for Women, Family and Youth Affairs. The purpose of the holiday was declared to be strengthening family traditions, increasing the importance of motherhood and attention to the social role of women.

Before the advent of the nationwide holiday, individual regions observed their own local “Mother's Days,” but only from 1998 did the date become uniform throughout the country.

On this day it is customary to congratulate mothers, give them flowers, cards, small gifts, or make pleasant handmade surprises. In many families festive dinners are held, children recite poems and make crafts, and schools and kindergartens hold themed concerts.

The holiday serves as a reminder: the most valuable thing is attention — sincere words of gratitude and care, which are more important than any gifts.
