Roskomnadzor did not rule out a complete blocking of WhatsApp* in Russia
According to Roskomnadzor, WhatsApp* is not complying with orders related to preventing crimes on the country's territory. The agency said that WhatsApp* is being used "to organize terrorist attacks, to recruit for them, as well as for fraud and other crimes against citizens," RBC reports.
The restrictions, the service claims, are being introduced in stages so that users can switch to other messengers. However, if the platform refuses to comply with the requirements of the law, the service "will be completely blocked."
Users have been reporting disruptions in WhatsApp*'s operation for several months now. The gradual deterioration in call quality began back in August, and in October Roskomnadzor announced a partial restriction on the messenger's operation "in order to counter criminals."
Talk of a possible blocking of the service has been going on for more than a year — since WhatsApp* was included in the registry of organizers of information distribution. Companies on that list are required to provide security services with data about users' activities, including the content of messages.
