An initiative to combat alcohol supermarkets has been developed in Kirov Oblast.

      The Legislative Assembly has prepared an initiative expanding regions’ powers to regulate alcohol sales. It is aimed at combating illegal nighttime alcohol trade.

      The proposed amendments to the federal law would allow regions to independently impose restrictions on the operation of liquor stores between 11 p.m. and 8 a.m. During a working meeting at the assembly, deputies approved the initiative.

      After consideration at a session of the Legislative Assembly, the bill is to be sent to the State Duma. Its adoption, deputies believe, will help more effectively combat illegal alcohol sales.

      Recall that the Kirov Region already has a ban on alcohol sales at night. However, local residents have serious doubts about its effectiveness. Authorities may plan to toughen penalties for liquor store owners, but it is by no means certain that this will significantly affect the situation.

      Also recall that the issue of liquor stores was raised by Governor Alexander Sokolov in his address. It was after that that the development of the new initiative began.
