A concept for a new architecture of international relations was presented at the Valdai Club.
The central theme was a radical shift in the balance of power on the world stage. The Russian leader described multipolarity as a natural response to the inability of Western institutions to adapt to contemporary challenges. It was emphasized that only the UN retains global significance among international structures, despite the difficulties in its work.
In the context of relations with the West it was noted that two Russian initiatives to develop cooperation with NATO went unanswered. According to the president, Russia demonstrated openness to dialogue on security issues, yet Western countries preferred to maintain outdated approaches. Particular emphasis was placed on the incorrectness of claims about possible Russian aggression toward the countries of the North Atlantic Alliance.
An important emphasis was the statement that Russia will remain a key factor of global equilibrium and does not intend to make concessions regarding its international status. It was stressed that any attempts to weaken the country are doomed to fail, and Russian foreign policy will consistently defend the principle of equality in international relations.
In analyzing the Ukrainian crisis, the view was expressed that its roots lie in Western policies after the end of the Cold War. According to the president, in a multipolar system this conflict could have been prevented, and the current actions of the European Union only exacerbate tensions.
Special attention was paid to prospects for relations with the United States. The Russian leader noted that during Donald Trump’s administration there was an opportunity to prevent the Ukrainian conflict, and he also expressed interest in restoring a pragmatic dialogue with Washington as a priority direction of foreign policy, transsibinfo.com reports.
