Scientists have found a way to protect against diabetes.
According to the portal "Novaya Nauka", in an experiment on mice they coated pancreatic beta cells with sialic acid — a special sugar molecule that masks cells from attacks by the immune system. The results were impressive: diabetes developed in only 6% of the experimental animals compared with 60% in the control group, while protective immune functions were preserved. Researchers note that the method is still at the preclinical testing stage, but it could become the basis for creating transplantable cells resistant to autoimmune rejection.
