The Federation Council proposed banning studio apartments from the "Family Mortgage" program.
The Federation Council said that studio apartments and living spaces under 28 square meters cannot be considered adequate housing for families with children, and therefore such options should be excluded from the "Family Mortgage" program.
The initiative was put forward by the Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Economic Policy, Andrey Kutepov. He sent an appeal to Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Tatyana Golikova, reminding her that a similar proposal had previously been made by the Accounts Chamber.
According to the senator, by buying studios families do not actually improve their housing conditions and will not be able to afford to have additional children until the loan is repaid. The problem is particularly acute in apartments without separate rooms, where cooking, childcare and rest take place in the same space, the Unified Developers' Resource website reports.
