Ministry of Forestry: natural forest regeneration predominates in Kirov Oblast.
According to the ministry, specialists first assess the area and determine whether restoration work is necessary. A restoration plan is then developed, nursery-grown seedlings are purchased, trees are planted and young plants are tended. In the first, third and fifth years after the seedlings are planted in the open ground, specialists carry out an inventory and monitor the growth of the future forest.
At the final stage the age of the trees is determined: after 8–10 years the grown seedlings form a fully formed forest, reaching an average height of 2.5–3 meters.
The regional Ministry of Forestry noted that restoring one hectare of forest requires 3,000–4,000 bare-root seedlings.
Forest restoration can be natural, when care is given to trees that regenerate naturally; artificial, when new trees are planted; or combined, when both methods are used. In the Kirov region, according to the ministry, the most common method is natural regeneration. The leaders in forest restoration are Nagorsky, Darovsky and Oparinsky districts, and the Afanasyevsky and Luzsky municipal districts.
Recall that in early June this year the regional government reported exceeding the planned targets for artificial forest restoration for the current year. In total, 2,400 hectares of forest were restored.
