A previously unknown moai statue was discovered on Easter Island.
The statue is approximately 1.6 meters tall. It was found lying at the bottom of a former pond and hidden beneath a layer of reeds. The discovery came as a surprise to scientists: until now moai had only been found on coastal platforms and the slopes of volcanoes, the Public News Service writes, citing The Daily Mail.
Researchers from the University of Arizona, who were conducting an inventory of the island's 981 statues, note that such a location for a moai is unique. Local residents also knew nothing of the statue's existence, and it was not mentioned in oral traditions.
According to the scientists, the new artifact may have been part of a ceremonial monument or deliberately hidden from prying eyes.
