Rospatent: Kirov is not the homeland of the "Tsarevich"
On July 15, a news article appeared on the government website stating that Kirov "received the status of Ivan Tsarevich's homeland." "The Directorate for Event Organization of Kirov Region reported that the Federal Service for Intellectual Property (Rospatent) granted the regional capital a new trademark — 'Kirov – the homeland of Ivan Tsarevich,'" the news read.
After conducting our own investigation, we could not find any trademark with such wording on Rospatent's website and wondered: did the government and the Directorate make a mistake in the wording? So much so that they proudly titled it: "Kirov received the status of Ivan Tsarevich's homeland."
Rospatent's press service responded to our inquiry about the accuracy of the wording as follows: "The Autonomous Nonprofit Organization 'Directorate for the Organization of Kirov's 650th Anniversary' filed an application with Rospatent on February 12, 2024, for the registration of the designation 'Homeland of Ivan Tsarevich' as a trademark. The word 'Kirov' is absent from the application. Therefore, there are no grounds for assigning the folk character 'Ivan Tsarevich' to a specific region or restrictions on the future use of his name."
