Scientists have discovered five new species of fungi.

Scientists from the Birobidzhan branch of the Institute of Regional Comprehensive Analysis of the Russian Academy of Sciences have for the first time identified five new species of fungi during research conducted within the specially protected natural zones of the Far East, reports transsibinfo.com. The institute explains that the discovery of new taxa and the expansion of knowledge about the geographic distribution of fungi becomes possible precisely because of scientific studies carried out in these territories. The scientists emphasize that the world of fungi is characterized by exceptional diversity. The latest findings confirm the need to continue research on the diversity of fungal communities in this macroregion. Several species of fungi are listed in the region's Red Book. One of the most well-known is Auriscalpium vulgare, also known as the "ear-shaped mushroom." It is small and has an unusual ear-like shape. It grows on coniferous trees, particularly spruce and pine. It is very rare and vulnerable to factors such as deforestation and climate change.
