In Kirov, a 10-month-old baby fell out of a window

About a thousand children fall out of windows in Russia every year, and often the peak of such accidents occurs during the warmer months. Children under the age of five suffer the most. According to Anton Fominykh, an orthopedic traumatologist at the children's department, a 10-month-old baby was injured in Kirov at the end of May when he fell from the second floor.

The child suffered a closed craniocerebral injury, a brain contusion, traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage, a closed fracture of the occipital bone, a bruise of the soft tissues of the scalp, as well as a bruise of the chest and back. Given the absence of compression of the brain and the absence of displacement of its structures, surgical treatment was not indicated. The boy was hospitalized for conservative therapy and observation. At the moment, the baby has been discharged in satisfactory condition for outpatient treatment by a neurologist, the doctor said.

Alexey Molchanov, head of the children's traumatology and orthopaedic department, named several simple rules that will help avoid such accidents.

For example, children should not be left unattended near open windows and balconies. About 70% of falls occur within the first 15 minutes after the baby is left alone. Special latches should be installed on the windows, which will not allow the child to open the window. Furniture should be moved away from the windows, and windows should be opened for ventilation, preferably from above.

In addition, it is important to seek medical help in a timely manner if an incident does occur. You should call an ambulance right away, and you should not try to help yourself. The slightest bone fragments can damage the spinal cord, the press service of the Ministry of Health of the Kirov region reported.
