Kirov doctors rescued a boy who pierced his eye socket with a skewer

About a month ago in Kotelnich, a 9-year-old child fell during street games and accidentally pierced the area of the eye socket above the upper eyelid with a skewer. The sharp object pierced deep into the skull.

Apparently, the child was able to pull out the skewer on his own immediately after the fall, so the relatives who ran up to him saw only an eyebrow injury. Later it turned out that the injury was much more serious than everyone thought. The boy was taken to the Kotelnich Central district hospital in serious condition. On the same day, he was urgently transported by helicopter to Kirov, to the Trauma Center.

Doctors diagnosed an open penetrating wound to the head and brain, a brain contusion, an intracerebral hematoma and a fracture of the base of the skull. It turned out that the skewer passed through the left frontal lobe of the brain, leaving a wound channel about 7 millimeters wide. By a lucky chance, the eye itself was not hurt, and the eyesight was preserved. However, due to brain damage, the boy had problems with movement — the muscles of his right arm and leg weakened.

The child spent about a month in the Trauma Center. During this time, his condition has improved significantly. After two weeks of immobility, he was allowed to sit down. Now the boy can already squeeze his right hand and is gradually walking with support. His general well-being also improved, he became more talkative and began to smile. The child was transferred to the Regional Children's Hospital for further treatment and recovery.
