What are the dangers of aroma diffusers?
Inhaling pleasant scents has become an integral part of creating a comfortable atmosphere in homes and offices. However, experts at Pirogov University urge vigilance, reminding that the aromas distributed by diffusers are, in fact, chemicals that we inhale.
"Unlike music or images, which do not penetrate the body, fragrant substances enter the bloodstream, albeit in minimal quantities," says Evgeny Taratukhin, PhD, Associate Professor, head of the department at the Institute of World Medicine at Pirogov University. He emphasizes that many of these substances are artificially synthesized and their long-term effects on the body are not fully understood.
Although large companies that value their reputation carefully monitor the safety of perfumes, "homemade" aromatic compositions are increasingly appearing on the market, the composition of which can be unpredictable.
Despite the fact that it is impossible to die from an aroma diffuser, its indirect effect on the body exists. This may be due to the possible effects of scented substances on the endocrine and nervous systems, as well as the potential carcinogenic effect.
"The list of scented substances with limited use and prohibited substances is constantly updated, and the reason for the ban is far from just allergies," the expert adds.
To protect yourself, Pirogov University experts recommend following the following rules when using aroma diffusers:
Avoid strong odors: The fragrance should be felt faintly, like a whiff.
Pay attention to sensations: An unpleasant odor or a stuffy nose may indicate poor-quality fragrance.
If you experience tickling, sneezing, or lack of air, go out into the fresh air immediately.
Ventilate the room when using fragrances during sleep.
It is important to remember that even natural essential oils can contain allergens. Following these simple rules will help you enjoy pleasant aromas without putting your health at risk.
