Six planets, a solar eclipse, and the Perseids: what is unusual about August 12th

      Six planets in one sky

      On the morning of August 12, observers could see the rare proximity of six planets at once — Mercury, Jupiter, Mars, Uranus, Saturn, and Neptune.

      The popular name for such a phenomenon is "planetary parade," although astronomically it does not mean that the planets are actually lined up in space in a single line. For an observer on Earth, they are located in one area of the sky along the ecliptic.

      And there is no need to look for the exact time when the "parade will begin": this is not an instantaneous event like the peak of an eclipse. The most suitable time for observations is during the pre-dawn hours, before the rising sun lights up the sky.

      Moreover, it will not be possible to see all six planets with the naked eye. Observing Uranus and especially Neptune will require optics.

      In the evening, a total solar eclipse will occur

      But the main astronomical event of the day will be the total solar eclipse on August 12.

      The lunar shadow will pass through the north of Russia, Greenland, Iceland, and then across the Atlantic to Spain and a small part of Portugal. In a much wider area of the Northern Hemisphere, the eclipse will be partial.

      The maximum of the eclipse will occur at approximately 20:46 Moscow time. At this moment, the Moon will cover the solar disk the most for observers located at the most favorable point on Earth.

      The maximum duration of the total phase will be about 2 minutes and 18 seconds.

      In the Kirov region, there will be no total phase: the path of totality will pass significantly north of the region.

      It is important to remember: where the eclipse is observed as partial, one should not look directly at the Sun without special protective filters. Regular sunglasses are not suitable for this.

      And when will the new moon occur?

      Here a small confusion arises with the timing, as the maximum of the solar eclipse and the astronomical conjunction of the Sun and Moon are not the same.

      According to NASA calculations, the conjunction of the Sun and Moon by ecliptic longitude will occur at approximately 20:37 Moscow time, while the maximum phase of the eclipse will be around 20:46 Moscow time.

      This means the difference is only a few minutes, but these are two different astronomical moments.

      And the Perseids

      The celestial program does not end here.

      August is the time of the famous meteor shower, the Perseids. On the night of August 12 to 13, it is worth looking at the sky away from city lights: it is during this period that the shower is near its annual maximum.

      A telescope is not needed for observations. On the contrary, the larger the part of the sky your gaze covers, the higher the chance of seeing a meteor.

      And the year 2026 is particularly convenient because the new moon coincides with the maximum of the Perseids. The bright Moon will not wash out the night sky.

      Thus, August 12 turns out to be a true astronomical marathon: in the morning — six planets, in the evening — a solar eclipse and a new moon, at night — the Perseids.

      And what do astrologers say?

      Here astronomy ends and the territory of astrological interpretations begins, which have no scientific confirmation.

      For astrologers, the current date is interesting primarily due to the solar eclipse and the new moon in Leo.

      Leo in astrological tradition is associated with personality, self-expression, recognition, leadership, creativity, and the question: "What do I want?"

      Therefore, the eclipse on August 12 is attributed the significance of a kind of reboot. In popular forecasts, this period is associated with a reassessment of goals, relationships with others, and one's own role in what is happening.

      Astrologers usually advise not to make impulsive decisions in the days around the eclipse, to observe what is happening more carefully, and not to try to get immediate answers to all questions.

      Is the "eclipse corridor" beginning?

      Yes — if using astrological terminology. The next eclipse will occur on August 28, 2026. It will be a partial lunar eclipse.

      Therefore, the period between the solar eclipse on August 12 and the lunar eclipse on August 28 is referred to by astrologers as the eclipse corridor.

      It is traditionally attributed an emotionally charged character: old questions may resurface, plans may unexpectedly change, some stories may come to an end, and others may begin.

      From an astronomical point of view, there is no special "corridor." Eclipses occur in pairs or groups for quite understandable reasons: for several weeks, the Sun is close enough to the line of the nodes of the lunar orbit, which allows for a solar eclipse at new moon, and about two weeks later, at full moon, a lunar eclipse.

      But even if we set astrology aside, August 12, 2026, indeed turns out to be unusual: six planets in the pre-dawn sky, a total solar eclipse, a new moon, and the Perseids all in one day.
