The Russian Cynological Federation (RKF) has published an analysis of popular stereotypes about the lives of dogs in the city and in the countryside. Experts concluded that there is no definitive answer to the question of where is better.
As noted by RKF President Vladimir Golubev, what matters more is not where the animal lives, but how the owner treats it. A dog on a chain in the village is unlikely to be happier than a city dog that is regularly exercised and walked. Reducing a pet's happiness to the presence of a house in the countryside or a city park is incorrect.
Among the advantages of country life are fresh air, constant access to the outdoors, and a rich environment for the dog with many smells and stimuli. However, there are also downsides: the danger of self-walking, the risk of eating poisonous plants or being poisoned by chemicals, encounters with wild animals, and the remoteness of veterinary clinics.
The city, on the other hand, provides access to round-the-clock veterinary care and more opportunities for socialization. A dog accustomed to noise and large crowds from an early age becomes more stress-resistant. With the right approach, the city can become an equally enriching environment: dog-friendly places such as cafes, cinemas, and parks can be visited. Among the downsides are ecology, road chemicals in winter, and hot asphalt in summer.
Breed also matters. Energetic working and guard dogs may lack activity and space in the city. Companion dogs, on the contrary, feel quite comfortable in urban conditions. Many breeds, such as dachshunds, terriers, and retrievers, fit well into both city and country lifestyles when properly cared for.
The RKF emphasized that an unhappy dog whose needs are ignored can grow up equally in the village or in the city. If a pet is happy with its owner, the question of living location takes a back seat.
