Rospotrebnadzor is investigating a plague outbreak in Mongolia.

      According to the Rospotrebnadzor, specialists from anti-plague institutions are conducting an examination of the territory of the natural focus and assessing its activity. Laboratory studies on site confirmed high epizootic activity of the focus.

      The reason for the intensified monitoring was a case of bubonic plague registered on July 20, 2026, in a resident of the Khovd aimag in Mongolia. The man became infected while butchering the carcass of an infected marmot. He is currently in the hospital receiving treatment, and his condition is assessed as satisfactory.

      The dangerous areas are located in the Bayan-Ulgiy and Khovd aimags, which fall within the boundaries of the active natural focus of the plague.

      Rospotrebnadzor noted that specialists regularly interact with their Mongolian colleagues and conduct joint exercises to respond to infectious disease threats. Over the past five years, there have been 29 such training sessions involving more than 1,500 specialists.

      There are a total of 11 natural foci of plague in Russia, seven of which are cross-border and are linked to the territories of neighboring countries, including Mongolia, Kazakhstan, and China. In 2025, local epizootics of plague were recorded in three foci.

      At the same time, there are currently no cases of human plague in Russia. The last such cases were recorded more than 10 years ago. The situation remains under the control of Rospotrebnadzor specialists.
