From infidelity to dragons: what readers of different ages choose
In the run-up to Youth Day, experts analyzed the literary preferences of readers of different ages and found out which genres are currently chosen by boomers, millennials, Generation X, and zoomers. Analysts studied data from the past year and compared the interests of the four generations. It turned out that the modern romance novel is the only genre that consistently ranks in the top three for all age groups. For millennials, this genre turned out to be the most popular. They also often choose romantic comedies and love fantasy. Generation X tends to prefer stories about "time travelers" — heroes who unexpectedly find themselves in other worlds. Boomers, aged 61 and older, most often read melodramas and novels about infidelity. Additionally, a third of the older generation regularly choose office romances. This genre turned out to be particularly in demand among them — 34% of the audience. Zoomers, on the other hand, more frequently escape into fantasy worlds. Among young readers, the top choices are modern romance novels, romantic and adventure fantasy. Experts note that young people are drawn to light plots, wonders, and escapism. At the same time, interest in books about magic schools among Generation Z turned out to be noticeably lower than among their parents. While about 27-30% of millennials, Generation X, and boomers read such stories, among zoomers, it is only 15%. The study also showed that Asian fantasy has become one of the main markers for younger generations. More than 60% of the audience for this genre consists of millennials and zoomers. As analysts from the Litnet platform note, literary preferences are directly related to age and life tasks: young people seek adventures and new worlds, while older generations look for stories about everyday life, relationships, and second chances.
