Open window, chocolate, and trash can: Kirov pet owners reminded of hidden dangers in the home
Specialists from one of the veterinary clinics in Kirov have warned pet owners about the "traps" that lurk in their apartments. Many of them seem harmless, but every year they cause injuries and deaths of cats and dogs.
The main seasonal danger is an open window. A curious cat can lose its balance and fall even from upper floors. Doctors recommend using special "anti-cat" nets.
Among other deadly risks:
- Blind cords — pets can get tangled or swallow a piece, which threatens choking or intestinal blockage
- Lily flowers, hyacinths, and tulips — extremely toxic to cats, even pollen can cause severe kidney damage
- Chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes, nuts, coffee, and alcohol — these are poisons for animals
- Trash cans — sharp edges and spoiled food can cause harm.
The stove and oven also pose dangers (pets can get burned or knock over hot dishes), washing machines (animals can climb into the drum and risk dying when it starts), household chemicals (poisoning), and electrical wires. Small items like threads, needles, beads, and batteries should also be kept out of reach — batteries are particularly dangerous as they can cause burns to mucous membranes.
Veterinarians urge Kirov residents to make their homes truly safe for pets. If there is a suspicion that an animal has swallowed something dangerous, it is essential to seek immediate veterinary care.
