In the Kirov region, the number of workers under the age of 40 decreased in 2025. According to a study by the analytical service FinExpertiza, the figure dropped by 2.5% over the year, or by 5,685 people. Currently, there are 223,915 working residents in this age category in the region.
The decline in the region was slightly less than the average in the Volga Federal District. Overall, in the Volga Federal District, the number of workers under 40 years old decreased by 3.3% — more than 207,000 people.
When comparing the Kirov region with other regions of the district, the situation does not appear to be the most severe. For instance, the number of young workers decreased the most in the Penza region — by 8%, in Mari El — by 7.5%, and in Chuvashia and the Orenburg region — by 5.2%. The smallest decline among the regions of the Volga Federal District was recorded in the Samara region — 0.8%, and in Tatarstan — 1.1%.
According to analysts, the reduction affected a large part of the country — a similar situation is observed in 72 regions. Overall, in Russia, the number of employed individuals under 40 years old decreased by 784,600 people, or by 2.4%, in 2025. The total number of workers in this age group has decreased to 31.3 million people.
The largest contribution to the decline came from Russians aged 30–34. Over the year, the number of working individuals in this category decreased by almost 8%. At the same time, specialists note that this group is considered one of the most active in the labor market and is usually at the peak of their professional careers.
At the same time, the number of employees over 40 years old continues to grow in the country. In 2025, their number increased by 1 million people, reaching 43.2 million. Currently, workers over 40 years old make up 58% of all employed Russians.
Experts attribute the ongoing changes primarily to demographic shifts. The age group under 40 today includes relatively small generations born in the 1990s, while the majority of older workers consist of more numerous generations from the 1970s and 1980s.
