In the village of Yelkino in the Lebyazhsky district, there has been no central water supply for three weeks. The well on Oktyabrskaya Street, which supplies all 70 private houses, broke down on April 8. As local residents told the People's Front, the reason was the undermining by meltwater — the ground collapsed, and water stopped flowing.
Repairs have not yet begun. For local pensioners, who make up the majority of the population, the situation has been unusual — this has not happened in the village before.
People are collecting rainwater in barrels, basins, and tubs. It is used for washing floors and dishes, as well as in the bathhouse. Drinking water is taken from a spring at the end of the village: it is more than a kilometer to walk from the center in one direction. For elderly people, this journey with canisters becomes a serious challenge.
Water delivery has been organized, but it is brought infrequently, and the volumes are insufficient.
After residents appealed to the People's Front, the administration of the Lebyazhsky district promised to restore the water supply next week. If weather conditions interfere, the village will be connected to a backup well. Public activists have already sent a request to the head of the district to increase water delivery until the repairs are completed. If the water supply is not restored in the coming days, an appeal will be made to the prosecutor's office.
