"Building not just a building": in Kirov, the foundation of the Feodorov Church was tested

      By this point, the construction had already moved on to one of the key stages — the testing of piles. And the prayer held at the site turned out to be not just a symbolic gesture, but a part of this important moment — when not only the technical but also the internal foundation is laid for the future temple.

      The rector of the Feodorov Church, Priest Vitaly Lapshin, spoke about the fact that the temple cannot be perceived as an ordinary object:

      “The construction of any Orthodox church is a good deed. But we must understand that we are not just building a building. We are building a house of God — a place where people will come with their joys, their problems, their requests, and their gratitude.

      In this temple, almost all human life will take place. It will begin here — with baptism, continue through sacraments, weddings, and for some, it will end here — in a farewell prayer.

      Therefore, along with the construction, it is important for us to reflect on our inner state. We ourselves need to change. Because if we tell others that they need to come to the temple and change, we must strive for that ourselves.”

      These words were spoken at a moment when a snowstorm was particularly raging over the site, and ahead were tasks of a different order — strict, engineering, requiring calculation and precision. The pile tests currently taking place at the site are one of the most responsible stages of foundation preparation. A total of 15 tests are planned. Each pile is checked using the static load method: a weight exceeding the calculated one is applied to it, after which specialists record any, even minimal, movements for several hours.

      As explained by Vadim Fedotov, a representative of the construction company “Rost,” the current load reaches 170 tons against a design load of 160.

      Such a “check with a margin” allows us to ensure that the foundation will withstand not only the calculated but also possible extreme loads. This is especially important given the complex soils and the proximity of the embankment.

      Such tests require special equipment and experience and are not conducted at every site. According to specialists, this format of work is being applied for the first time in the Kirov region, and the number of contractors capable of performing them at the proper level in the country is limited.

      But on this day — amidst the snow, heavy machinery, and strict calculations — all of this sounded different. Because alongside the loads and numbers was prayer. Despite the fact that the image of the future church is still in the hearts of believers and on the model, the holy place attracts people. For the parishioners, the walls are not important; they come here to pray and open their souls to God. It was the same today.

      And perhaps it is in such moments that it becomes clear: the temple does not begin when the walls are raised. It begins where meaning appears. And faith and prayers bind both the walls and hearts stronger than concrete.
