In Kirov, a man had his thick intestine replaced with a thin one.
Recently, a man in serious condition was admitted to the gastroenterology department of the regional hospital, suffering from severe pain and constant diarrhea. He had an exacerbation of ulcerative colitis—a life-threatening condition that cannot be resolved with conservative treatment. In such cases, doctors usually remove the affected colon and bring the small intestine outside through an artificial opening. After this, patients use a colostomy bag for life.
However, our specialists were able to preserve the man's usual way of life. For the first time in Kirov, a colorectal surgeon performed an operation to create an internal reservoir from the small intestine.
After three weeks of preparing the patient, during which the doctors stabilized his condition, a three-hour surgery was performed. The surgeon completely removed the non-viable colon and formed a sort of "pocket" from a part of the small intestine capable of holding stool. The most challenging part was to stitch the necessary sections of the intestine together without affecting the nerves and important organs, but the doctor managed to do it.
For another three weeks, the man recovered in the hospital. He was later discharged in satisfactory condition.
