A 75-year-old resident of Kirov made his own kettlebells and trained in the snow: he won a ticket to the GTO finals.
75-year-old resident of the Kirov region Valery Chernychev has proven that age is not an obstacle to great victories. This week it became known that the amateur athlete won a ticket to the Final of the IV season of the "People's Games GTO Sportloto" (project "Hero of GTO"). The competitions will take place from April 3 to 5 in Sirius, where the pensioner will go.
Valery Chernychev is a regular participant in online competitions in multi-sport, but this season has been special for him. To make it to the top, he had to demonstrate not only physical fitness but also ingenuity. Instead of looking for ready-made equipment, the pensioner independently constructed all the necessary sports gear. He performed exercises outdoors in winter conditions—recording his qualifying attempts right on the snow.
In the current season, the resident of Kirov applied in two age categories, choosing maximum loads for himself: "Amateurs" (65+) and "Going for a record: kettlebell snatch" (71+). Valery received a ticket to the in-person final not based on his sports ranking, but as a result of a nationwide lottery organized in a Telegram mini-application. A total of 10 free spots were drawn in this stage.
It is worth noting that the popularity of the amateur GTO movement in the region and the country is growing. Organizers report that 19,210 applications were registered in the fourth season of the project. At the same time, organizers note a significant increase in interest in sports among people with disabilities—their number has increased sixfold compared to the previous season.
For Valery Chernychev, the trip to Sirius will be an opportunity to test his strength in the final complex, which includes a running distance and a series of functional exercises. For now, his story serves as an example for his fellow countrymen: even at 75 years old, with makeshift materials and snowdrifts outside the window, one can prepare for competitions of national level.
