In Kirov Oblast, 7,500 newborns underwent free screening.

Since 2023, the Kirov region has operated a neonatal screening program — screening newborns for congenital and hereditary diseases. Children are now tested free of charge for 36 conditions, including rare genetic disorders that are important to detect in the first days of life, the regional government press service reported.

Blood for the test is taken in the maternity hospital on the 2nd–4th day after birth — from the heel. The screening is performed only with the parents' written consent. If the test shows abnormalities, the family is informed immediately and the child is referred for additional examinations and treatment.

According to 2025 data, almost 7,600 newborns underwent screening. Several children were found to have serious diseases, including cystic fibrosis, congenital adrenal hyperplasia and biotinidase deficiency. Thanks to early diagnosis, treatment begins immediately, which helps prevent severe complications and preserve the child's health.
