Starting March 1, online services will no longer be able to impose subscriptions.
As we wrote earlier, in the autumn deputies of the State Duma adopted in the second and third readings a bill prohibiting online services from pushing subscriptions without users' explicit consent. Today it became known that it will take effect on March 1. This was reported by Anton Nemkin, a member of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technology and Communications, in a conversation with RIA Novosti.
Nemkin noted that the measure is aimed at protecting citizens' rights when signing up for online subscriptions and other services involving recurring payments. This concerns streaming services, apps, online courses, marketplaces and so on.
According to the politician, sometimes services continue to charge money even if a person has canceled the subscription or changed their card. The new bill is aimed at combating such behavior. It prohibits companies from using previously saved card or bank account details unless the user has clearly indicated that they want this.
